Fighting For Justice Then; Fighting For Justice Now
The firm’s ties date back to the civil rights era, and today, we continue the tradition of seeking justice on behalf of all individuals – especially those in marginalized communities.

A Legacy Of Justice For All
The firm’s founding partner, Jay Ellwanger, was inspired by his family’s role in the civil rights movement. His uncle, the Rev. Joe Ellwanger, led the first march of white Alabamians through the streets of Selma in support of voting rights. He participated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in several seminal moments of the Civil Rights Movement and was sent by Dr. King to meet with President Johnson at the White House to urge passage of the Voting Rights Act. Jay Ellwanger’s father, David, also a lawyer, stood up to the KKK while a student at the University of Alabama in the late 1950s and ran for the Alabama state senate in 1966 to unseat a staunch segregationist.
Fighting Against Today’s Injustices
Today, Jay Ellwanger and David Henderson, continue to use their work to further those same principles of equal rights for all, standing up and doing their part when it comes to discrimination and civil rights. The team at Ellwanger Henderson works to fight injustices that still exist against individuals based on race, national origin, gender and sexual orientation.

Client Testimonials
“Jay and his team went above and beyond bringing my family justice when I was fired from my career at 5 months pregnant. I really wasn’t sure I even had a case and beat myself up for a little while thinking I had done something horribly wrong. After talking about the situation, Taylor and Jay helped me accept that what happened to me and my family during what was supposed to be such a beautiful time was, in fact, incredibly wrong. They were able to rectify the extreme loss I suffered by losing my income, healthcare, and the progress I had worked so hard to achieve in my career…”
S. Long, Client
“Unfortunately, I was involved in a sexual harassment incident at my workplace. After dealing with the local “good ‘ol boys”, I felt like I had no support or confidence in the system to do the right thing. I had many individuals, including lawyers, inform me that “no one would touch this case” since one of the individuals involved was a local politician. However, I was fortunate to receive Jay’s phone number through a mutual acquaintance. Immediately, Jay and Vas reviewed my case and gave me a call. I felt comfortable throughout the entire process with Jay, Vas, and all their colleagues that collaborated…”
